Grey4Green

Project ID: 2021-1-DK01-KA220-ADU-000026601

Duration: February 2022 – Ongoing

The project

Grey4Green – Senior volunteers for nature conservation is a project co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme and it is BioLiving's sixth European project. Under the coordination of FO-Aarhus, an NGO in Denmark, its partners are Associação BioLiving and the Municipality of Lousada, in Portugal; the Association des Agences de la Democratie Locale, in France; the Centre for Advancement of Research and Development in Educational Technology Ltd – Cardet, in Cyprus; and the Environmental Agency of Iceland, in Iceland.

The ageing of population is a worldwide phenomenon with major implications for all sectors of society. Due to low birth rates, increasing average life expectancy and migration flow dynamics, worldwide population is “turning grey”, and Europe is no exception. An ageing population brings social, health, economic, and other issues. In all countries, measures to help older people remain active and participative are a necessity, not a luxury. The United Nations and the European Commission agree that quality ageing is a responsibility of all (private, public, and civic actors), and can only be created and sustained through the participation of multiple sectors.

On the other hand, environment and fight against climate change are a lingering issue that also needs urgent action, with the involvement of all societal actors.

Considering this, Grey4Green aims to promote active ageing and social inclusion, and to contribute to climate action through the involvement of senior citizens in nature conservation volunteering programmes and through the capacitation of personnel working in the third age sector to develop and implement such programmes. It also aims to support adult learners (older people + personnel working in the third age sector) by providing high-quality training and international exchanges, fostering key competences and skills, while recognising the elderly and all their potential as productive citizens and as agents of change.
