The project
LUSITANICA is a project dedicated to nature conservation and to sustainable and integrated valorisation practices of the territory coordinated by Associação BioLiving and supported by Estarreja Municipality. By implementing micro reserves, LUSITANICA aims to conserve biodiversity and to recover areas of high ecological value. This project also wishes to conserve historical and cultural heritage present in Estarreja Municipality.
Associação BioLiving was founded in 2016 and since then it has developed environmental awareness activities and ecological restauration actions with local communities in Estarreja Municipality, especially in the parish of Canelas. In LUSITANICA project we intend to continue actively involving communities in conservation of native biodiversity of Lusitanian ecosystems in order to create more sustainable landscapes and forest management models.
In this project we work with local landowners to achieve a more sustainable management and ecological restauration of 2 hectares of former eucalyptus monoculture lands. Detecting the presence of species of high ecological value in these lands, like the Gold-striped salamander (Chioglossa lusitanica), the Schreiber's green lizard (Lacerta schreiberi) and the Stag beetle (Lucanus cervus) drove the Association to preserve and restore these areas. So, since 2019 Associação BioLiving has been successful in sustainably managing these lands with the support of volunteering programs of Portuguese Sport and Youth Institute and with the help of hundreds of volunteers committed to make the difference!
LUSITANICA project aims to implement micro reserves that enable biodiversity to thrive, to establish areas dedicated to nature conservation and to increase our contact with nature. We believe that local efforts to preserve biodiversity can raise social and ecological dynamics for a more sustainable world!
